RIP Kreba ??? -mix

I drank some beer yesterday and made a lo-brow, rustic "party" mix. Loads of Armand van Helden related tracks, out-of-style beats and weird combos. The only original song - not remixed or mashed up or looped - is from Vengaboys. So there you go. The cover's mighty funny, though.

Recording from last Saturday

Those who were at Dynamo upstairs last Saturday already know how good dj Herman Prime's guest set was, but for all the rest, here's a two hour recording of him playing. No tinkering with the tape afterwards except for the volume of it, so the sound is a bit raw and mixing is as good as it was then.

5 Best new Finnish acts you haven't heard of

I'm actually a journalist by day, and a lot of the time I work on stories relating to music. I've also done something close to 150 reviews. Because of this, I was asked to contribute to the Future Dozen poll of Finland. Basically they ask Finnish music journalists to name three promising acts that haven't released a full album. I did what was asked and named three artists.

Unfortunately none of them got in the top 12. There's no need to keep my choices secret, so here's my top three with two extra names that have impressed me lately and still haven't got an album out (as I know).

Aves

The first Finnish chill wave band? Maybe not, but their dreamy soundscapes still deliver.

Sans Parade

From my hometown Turku comes this supergroup of sorts. Can't imagine why this wouldn't hit the indie vein big time if they can make an album.

Arttu Aka Lump

Best kept secret of Finnish house music. Dude lives in Lisbon and makes soulful house tunes that have caught the ear of important house labels in Central Europe.

Erkka

I discovered this just yesterday. Dude has a deft ear for melodies and knows how to build new disco tunes. I'm very impressed in a very small time.

Roberto Rodriguez aka Manolo

One of the old foxes of Finnish house scene finally gets a number one breakthrough with Night Rhythm. He also has an album on the way and just started to run his label Serenades.

I'm very impressed and happy for all of these. Keep up the good work (and drop me promos if you want me to play them or write about them)!

Thanks for the weekend

Phew, two very different nights in a row.

The first one we held the line at Turku UG site and partied till six in the morning with Nam Shub of Enki, DKSTR, Fossa and Dj Puliukkonen. At five o'clock the place was packed with smoke, pretty much everyone left were us, the organizers and dj's starting pumping gabber. Just then someone came there from a Halloween party, dressed up as a bunny or something. He had - for some unknown reason - a saxophone with him, so he was quickly put next to an open mic and made to play with the even quickening hardcore techno sounds of Atte Häkkinen. I passed by him when I went home and he played on his way home, too.

Good times.

The next evening we played some quirky punk, Finnish obscurities and AOR at cozy Bar Kuka. Lots of people said they liked the selection and asked what we played to know it better. It always makes me very happy. Enjoyed both nights very much, thanks for everyone involved.

For bonus: here's all JS666 albums re-released. The incredible JS666 was one the first artists we brought to Turku warehouse parties and some of his songs just got played at five o'clock last Friday morning, so it's quite fitting his albums got re-released just now in tune the weekend afterglow. Let's call it destiny.

Law & Order in the Disco

You'd guess that there wouldn't be any disco songs that line on the same side with law, police or institutions that maintain order, since discos were places of hedonism and all about breaking free from the chains of society. You'd guess wrong: there are a handful of disco tunes that emphasize law & order, here's a few of them.

Love Committee - Law & Order

The chorus is a bit sugared with orchestration and harmonies, but when you get to the verses, you'll feel the soulfulness. All around great song. BTW, if there was a board seat empty at the Love Committee, I'd be interested.

Dee D. Jackson - Galaxy Police

Camp values aplenty with this one. It's not a bad song by any standards, though. It also includes a weird spoken word outro.

Quest - Boy Scouts

Boy Scouts have their own disco tune? Who would have known? This one's a favorite of mine. Listen carefully to the lyrics: loads of social questions and the answer is always boy scouts. Amazing bassline.

Don Armando's 2nd Avenue Rhumba Band - Deputy of Love

"I confess to be the deputy of love". I could have chosen another Kid Creole/Ze Records tune, maybe, since he has many crime stories in his songs. This one has to be one of the best. This song just rolls along, doesn't it?

3 pieces of Disco criticisms I'd dance to

Disco wasn't - and still isn't - everyone's cup of tea. Even I don't think all of it is great. Here's 3 songs that work as examples of good type of criticism - not like the one based on prejudices and lack of understanding of music - directed towards the disco phenomenon in the late 70's.

1. The Tubes - Slipped My Disco

This one's basically a story about a white guy who tries to dance too much and slips his spinal disc. It's pretty fun, funky and, well, quite danceable. I spotted this one from dj Strangefruit set from Beats in Space.

2. Mother's Finest - Dis Go Dis Way Dis Go Dat Way

One hell of a rolling, rocking disco jam that exemplifies how a dance song should sound like while poking fun at disco. Love every minute of it. BTW, it was also edited by Harvey.

3. Funkadelic - Undisco Kidd

For me, George Clinton is one of the most artistic people of last century. It's well known he didn't dig the rhythmic patterns of disco and he did something productive about it - a whole alternative funky universe to challenge the unoriginal and mechanic disco beat.

+ BONUS

A Finnish funky jam as a bonus, legendary Juice Leskinen doing a weird take on black music. The spoken word making fun of disco chit chat at 2:00 is superb.

5 new reworks I'd buy

I've been trying to link to a lot of freebies on the blog, but now it's time to inform you about some tracks that are on sale now. Most of them are limited vinyl or going to be sold out soon, so if you fancy them, it might be best to hurry.

1. Bottin presents Message from the Leader

A new edit from my favorite Venetian. The Message From The Leader -side, the one that starts from 1:30 on the video is the winner here. I haven't been to figure out what's the original track, but the synths have a Patrick Adams flavor to them... Limited to 300 copies.

2. Theo Parrish - Ugly Edits CD comp

Let me say this first: Over 30 euros for a CD is a lot to pay. But when you consider that this is an official repress and the first press of the CD comp is bidding around 50 euros and the original vinyl singles - which are heavily bootlegged in not-so-good quality - ship sometimes near a hundred... well, it doesn't feel that bad - and probably for me the edit number 7 is alone worth the money.

3. Stevie Nicks - "Smiling At You" (Young Edits Going Home Version)

A piano and bass driven edit of Stevie Nicks. This one seems to have gone already from some distributors, so act fast if you want this one. Already tested and approved by so many tastemaker dj's. Kojak is a vinyl only label, so you have to look for that piece of plastic if you want it at full glory. Nice video too - I was there at the boat BTW.

4. Locussolus - I Want It (Lindstrom & Prins Thomas Remix)

I guess the least rare of the things listed here. Prins Thomas & Lindstrom doin' a remix again, and doing it well. Funniest track of the moment with all those horns, irresistible groove and those few nods to Venus. Can't wait to play this one.

5. Jazzanova feat Ben Westbeech - I Can See (Filippo Moscatello Rmx)

This Jazzanova track was originally released years ago, but now it gets the disco treatment. From the high quality label Wurst Edits, Filippo Moscatello really makes the best out of the soulful vocal and gets the show on the road with that rolling bassline. Wurst releases have the habit of selling all copies out, so better cop it if you see it around. It's also digitally available.

Italians do it better

Italians do it better is something more than just what used to read in Madonna's t-shirt in the 80's. It's also one of the most stylistic and focused indie "dance" labels around. Their bands were one of those new acts we all liked when we started DWTF in 2009.

A recent RA article talks with the label manager Mike Simonetti and goes a bit into the history of the label. I recommend you check that out for a quick recap of his story and musical taste.

Even more importantly, I recommend taking a look on Simonetti's and Glass Candy's Johnny Jewel's Soundcloud pages.

Mike has loads of edits he's done there for download in a hi-res format. None of the usual crappy disco mutilations that are called edits, but instead wisely picked songs that are given little edit qualities. Here's a sample one.

Johnny Jewel on the other hand gives out - I kinda wonder why - loads of IDIB instrumentals for free as WAV's. I have always had twofold attitude towards Glass Candy's lead singer, so these instrumentals really hit the spot for me. Just amazingly beautiful stuff, like this one:

Picture listening these while you're driving, at the moment when the night hits the town and the streets are all rainy and neon lights lit up. I really should play these more often.

Party triathlon

Still recovering from last weekend at Flow (and from a nasty flu). Let's hope for a speedy recovery since we have a three days of DWTF activity ahead. Party triathlon if you will.

Tomorrow (Thursday) we have U-lympialaiset, a completely new set of outdoor activity near Kioski. Come there and listen to the music and try to top the scores in 6 games.

One of those songs I never really remember to put in my record bag when I'm going dj'ing. A shame and a pity.

We're playing tomorrow in comfy Kolo. Last Saturday there was a blast, loads of people and dj's Goatboy & Flipper playing. Let's see if we can cook up as good as night as that was.

And when the weekend comes we'll join in on the fun at Turku Non Jazz, one of the most imaginative festivals around. We'll hit the Dynamo downstairs Saturday and warm up for San Soda. Trust me, if you give us a dancefloor and a soundsystem like that + free hands to play disco and house it'll be amazing. Of course San Soda will probably do an even better job, so checking out his set is really recommended as well.

I just read this review/analysis of Johan Agebjorn's latest record and it got me thinking. The author is trying to explain why the trendy indie crowd needs to rationalize their taste by rejecting some music as tasteless. In this case they needed to have the italo disco trend to dig Sally Shapiro. I party agree but I admit I like the cheeziness of italo as well.

Let's watch this video of Gary Low and have a short analysis what I mean.

A small foreword: The term italo disco generally refers to medium tempo italian dance music made in the 80's by synthesizers and drum machines. There was for a long time in Italy a suspicion that Italians didn't know how to make disco, so a lot of the artists had American names and sung in English. Some of the time they didn't know English at all, so their pronunciation and lyrics are a bit silly.

Now, let's get to the video. Gary Low performs here in the Superclasifica show. You have to understand that most of the disco acts where studio bands who made records and didn't really perform. So the videos are mostly singers doing playbacks with silly dancing and weird tv effects.

Notice these:
* Dude dresses up on all white
* Really nice percussion beat in the intro
* Bit toy-ish and wacky wi-wi-wiiu-wi-wi-wi-wiiou-sounds from the synths. I like!
* The acted emotion when the singing starts
* AHHH, the moment when the verse starts. His voice is pretty flat with a hefty accent. He seems to force it a bit. And, hmmm, quite different from the chorus part
* But wait, when it starts to build on towards the chorus with the cowbell. Gary starts to jump because he too knows something amazing is going to come in the chorus. I LOVE HOW HE POINTS W/ HIS FINGERS!
* WHOOMP! A children's choir appears from nowhere. And it's really excellent, can't critisize it at all.
* Gary goes back to "singing" the second singers' part with a totally different voice
* When it starts going to the second chorus he knows again it's a winning song and he loosens up as a result
* And he also "sings" when the children are doing the second chorus

It's a silly video, but the song is really solid. Get a hold of the 12 inch, I guarantee it will work on the dance floors still. No irony needed.

Generally italo disco had an image that was and still is laughable. But beneath that surface there were numerous classically trained composers who maybe tried disco once or twice. And italo had a great influence on house music's birth in Chicago. And even if the vocals are a bit silly, they have that nice naive emotional or sometimes funny quality. Either way, when you hear it you end up loosing yourself up a bit, and that's only a good thing in a disco environment.

I'll promise to do a top 10 italo disco before the Suomi-Ruotsi-Disko-Ottelu, since I think I'll be playing a lot of that stuff.

Hooray, we have landed our first foreign dj visit; Johan Agebjörn of Sally Shapiro fame is going to come here later this month when we're having our Finnish-Swedish-Disco-Battle. So check your calendars for 23rd of his month. I've created a FB event, so you can check Finnish info there. To complete the lineup, we chose Disco Urse - one of the best collectors of Finnish Disco music - who rocked memorably the Dynamo upstairs when we last had him here. Check his cult Synteettinen Suomi for evidence if don't know him yet.

I'm very excited about this already. You don't get too often a chance to get that many heroes you've liked to perform in your town. Now we are making it happen, partly thanks to Heineken and Turku Modern.

3 pieces of proper Italian disco meat: Revanche, Macho & Easy Going

Last Saturday was sweaty and nice. Thanks to everyone who came and danced, but especial thanks to a group of guys who made a request I just had to blog about.

It think they were all early 20's and asked me when I was going to play Revanche's 1979 - it's dancing time. I was so amazed that young dudes actually knew about this lesser known, gay-ish Italian disco project produced by Jacques Petrus and even more amazed that they digged particularly the bassline of 1979. I had a quick discussion with the guys and told them I kinda liked the other songs on the LP better and put one on from the record after our talk. It just made me very happy.

To celebrete that, here's three good pieces of disco meat produced by Italians. Pretty loud overtones of "men to men action", but it doesn't take anything away from the music. I'd rather say it's the contrary.

This one has even a dancing video with uniforms and everything. It's from the aforementioned Revanche LP. Very energetic, great strings (!) and synth work.

I still haven't understood what's this about. The name of the song is Gay time latin lover and I'm not too sure it's made by musicians who'd know English that well. This was produced by the great Claudio Simonetti, known for his scores on horror films. BTW, the picture above is the album cover of another Easy Going record. Dunno, what's happening there, is the other dude trying to fist the other dude? Where did their pants go?

Man, this is so good, sweaty, pumping, intense, hard, leatherish and very macho. Straight up fast-paced and amazingly played disco anthem of the gay scene. It's actually a cover of Spencer Davis Group, but gayed way up! Made by Petrus and Mavalasi. Great cover too, you can see the other dude from the reflection in his shades.

Man, how amazing was last Friday? I've never had so much positive feedback as I got from Diskoluistel-U. Just random people, joggers and such, came up and said we should do it every Friday. It's a surprising reaction to people just putting up a soundsystem next to a roller skate park and blasting away pretty rare-ish disco, house and chiptune.

I just wanna say I'm very happy that we did it, now I can cross that off my personal "to do list for life".

This week we have something good for store also. We are going back to Dynamo upstairs after a long while. No guests, just me and Ripatti going deep with our selections. We've dubbed the night as Diskotusneuvottelut, after the political farce we are just going through. FB is also up and top 10's from both of us are coming up soon. I think we'll lean on our disco records and spice it up with newer favorites.

If you'd rather listen to best house available on Saturday, I heartily recommend Sheikki Sheikki's party. The boys have an anniversary coming up and they have done an excellent job with their club for three years.

And if rap selection is you thing, go ahead to So Damn Tuff Open mic. Very recommended. They have become quickly one of the best rap clubs around.

At least three excellent clubs on one night, that's Turku nightlife nowadays.

And also big thanks for Heikki Sillanpää aka DKSTR for updating our old discus thrower logo to space age. It's soooo cooooll :D

If you didn't know this, now you know: we are hosting & djing in this Diskoluistel-U rollerskating event this Friday. It's free, fun and for the whole family. People seem to very excited about the idea. And believe me, so am I. It's a bit of a dream come true for me if we can pull this off nicely - I've wanted for a few years to do this kind of thing, you know, see how it would work just to bring people together in the sunshine and play them disco outside of the clubs.

If you're a dj, online mixes are like your calling cards. It's pretty much consensus of everyone in the dj community these are the best way to show your talent in picking awesome tunes and putting them together so they make more sense together than apart. They're also a great justification to the claim that dj's do their best to present music you wouldn't hear on radio or tv.

They also provide a pretty good learning experience, when you have to go through your records and try them together. After a while you can look back and proudly listen what moved you then when you had made a mix.

Here's THREE masterpieces of a mix. All of them have spent weeks and months in my mp3 player. All of them are also downloadable, so you can have fun with them while biking or doing some other summer outdoor activity.

DJ Anonymous: Disco #5 (2010) by DJ Anonymous

Everyone in Finnish dj scene knows dj Anonymous. He's a dj legend, great blogger and the go to guy of Helsinki when you need wisdom on good music and it's history. Here's my absolute favorite mix from him. It's generally a bit difficult to mix disco smoothly together, but this mix draws the lines from different records out of different eras and countries. Some of these records are so rare I'll probably never hear them in a different context, but they work so well here I don't mind that much.

LEXX - Live-DJ-Set@BoutiqueHostalSalinasIbiza by Zukunft

The second one comes from Swiss dj and producer called Lexx. You can take and learn so much from this balearic and sunny mix. It's not really beatmixed together at all, but still it's seamless in atmosphere and feeling. After I heard this mix I rushed to cop at least five of these tracks.

MIKE SIMONETTI & JOHNNY JEWEL / ALBUTEROL by JOHNNY JEWEL

The last one is a bit of a contrary to the sunny and beachy atmosphere Lexx's mix. It's Johnny Jewel and Mike Simonetti of Italians do it better fame. This one's really classy affair too. Not so much obscure findings, but household records just played a bit slower or edited a little. These records make so much sense together, they paint a whole stylistic picture of nightlife in town.

Summer hit guesses for '11

Last year I was pretty good at this: I already played last summer's big anthem, Tensnake's Coma Cat in March on my radio show and got the promo album of Aeroplane's We Can't Fly among the first.

Let's see how far these will go:

Nice floating bassline and vocal hooks you get instantly. Not prime time material necessarily.

I think this is going places. It's a mood tune for me at least, so I'd guess you'll have to save it and play it outside the peak hours.

Cut Copy's Zonoscope will be rediscovered near the summer, I guess. Just waiting maybe for an extended version or a remix to seal the deal.

Next 4 years

Election day was yesterday. Two-fold political history was made; True/basic Finns bumped to a historical height and Centralist-Right Wing party won their first election. Weird combination. One party that knows best how to campaign and pitch candidates and another one that's comical in their lack of style but still are able to talk to huge amounts of voters.

The next 4 years will be interesting. I doubt we would see a lot of changes, though. At least not in the scale people I know are afraid of. Here's my reason for not going drama queen on this: I'd guess the political system is so complex that even this big a bunch of newbies could make a real revolution without the knowhow and connections that older parties have to experts, labor unions, business organizations, lobbers, media and so on. Those networks are where a lot of the actual power is.

Still, I have to admit I'm pretty bummed about the share of ex-athletes and other celebrities in the mix. I love sports but being good at one doesn't add up in my books to being able make general, intellectually and scientifically accurate decisions that are good for the whole of society. Not saying they're necessarily exclusive, either.

Anyway, I hope you voted.

Friday's Memory Lane: The Unforgettable Summer of '10

Last bit of Memory Lane to walk. I know I've mostly shared some unfortunate gigs and bad stuff, but this last post is dedicated to the good things we've been through. Most of the them happened during last summer.

The Unforgettable Summer of '10

Last summer wasn't just good it was pretty awesome. We had been struggling with some stuff earlier that year, with me and Risto mostly left running the DWTF. Just before the summer we got some really good news: we got booked to Turku Modern and Ilmiö-festival. It was a great honor for a dj group that wasn't that well known, even in Turku.

Dj-wise that week or two was the top time of my life. Both events happened a week apart from each other. I remember how we sat down with Risto to plan almost every track we would play on our Turku Modern gig. We even got rhythmic instruments that we wanted to give the crowd so they could jam with our records. And Lauri Hannus took some promo photos of us that we still use.

I was really really nervous when we started our gig. We had just heard from dj Anonymous that we had to re-schedule our gig with the other artists that played the same venue: Lauri Soini and Roberto Rodriguez. We had to go first, and had to try to get that info to our followers as quickly as possible. That re-arranging also wrecked our game plan: We ended up playing to a room where people where still finishing their dinners. We had a plan to start with dark house but changed it so that we opened with melodic disco. I remember being nervous as hell through the whole gig.

Just when we where ending our set the other dj's took over. The first thing Lauri did was to dim the lights down and up the volume of the soundsystem. The whole atmosphere changed to a much more suitable for dancing and his selection of house started working on a whole new level. Me and Risto were pretty bummed that we hadn't understood to do the same thing. It was supposed to be our best gig ever and we didn't get even that right!

But the best experience came afterwards. I got really drunk for the remaining three days of Turku Modern on free artist beer. I actually remember having a weird constant taste on my mouth on Sunday. I met a bunch of new and old friends and checked out some amazing dj's. It felt great to be a part of the festival, even if our contribution had been quite minimal.

Of course I ended up on the bridge Saturday night where all the organizers and artist like to hang. The sun came up and people where still very happy about the earlier night. I think I saw a rainbow too.

Even if we had somewhat flopped our gig at Modern we more than covered up for it later in the Ilmiö festival. We were booked to play in the boat that carries passengers to the festival and back.

I remember it well. The forecast had been awful. Load of rain and thunder were supposed to come. But when we got our records to the ship, it was all sunshine and a light breeze. Eventually we didn't catch any of the rain. First we actually tried to play on the deck but had to move to the cabin. Just when it dripped a little bit in the day, I played this:

It was good fun to play through the day, but the real experience was the night shift, when people where heading back to city. The night had settled in, it was cool and calm. The boat went gently towards to the city lights.

And we had just the right records to fit that mood. Dark and easy music, Italians do it better records, Bruce Springsteen, maybe also Arthur Russell. People were giving thumbs up and I remember Heikki from Videovalvontaa talking very kindly about us to a French artist he was hosting. Last boatride we did we upped the tempo a bit since people were feeling like dancing.

It was really fulfilling to feel like I was contributing with my music selection to that mood we all had: feeling grateful that the festival was over, feeling a bit sentimental with the ocean and night sky, feeling very easy. Won't forget that moment.

Funny detail after the boat had docked for the last time. Me and Risto were waiting for someone to pick up the loudspeakers and mixer at the dock, when we heard some noise from the top of the roof. A while later someone woke up from there, his jacket was soaked from the other side from sleeping on the wet roof. He jumped down from there, looked at us and started walking towards the town.

Such a great summer. I feel like I achieved everything I wanted, everything else is just bonus. Hopefully this one will be even better. At least we got something very special planned.

Thursday's Memory Lane: Everywhere

Wow, it's been a really long day, but we're not slipping from the week's schedule - Thursday's Memory Lane it is! I'm also not going to compete with Pete's epic and hilarious Naantali retrospection from yesterday, but instead keeping this short and sweet.

First off, some great news: We have awesome plans with the infamous U-komitea for this year's Olohuone 306,4 km² festival in Turku. These were actually confirmed this week and will be announced shortly. Olohuone takes place the first week of June and is spreading all over Turku with multiple events. The main idea of the festival is to host unordinary events in ordinary public places. The public space belongs to us, the citizens - I guess that's what the Olohuone is after, and that's what we at DWTF can relate 100% to.

Waiting for the summer, it's a good time to reminisce last year's Olohuone festival. For us, it was a dizzy affair:

Yes, that's me and Kimito Diskotek of Sussudio fame up there. I guess Pete is somewhere on the background, since he wasn't too fond of the heights. You wouldn't know it from the photo, but you can see half the town from the highest platform of Samppalinna's diving tower. And the view is quite spectacular from the lowest platform as well.

Vinylous (is that a word?) chaps that we are, we also had to carry two turntables up there and back. Yes, it could have been done easier. Much easier. A slipmat found it's way on to the swimming pool, the wind of changes was a constant threat for our poor needles... But would've it been that much fun otherwise? Hell no! It was an amazing experience, one that I'll never forget, to watch the sun go down and put on something like this:

Fleetwood Mac:Everywhere (Psychemagik Edit) by misterthee

Timeless quality. The Psychemagik edit was played an awful lot last summer, and definitely will be this summer as well. It's impossible to get bored with it. Just like warm summer evenings and Fleetwood Mac in general, then. See you at Olohuone in a month and a half!

Wednesday's Memory Lane: Worst gig, ever

We go on with the Memory Lane. This time I wanted to share something educational, so you can listen closely and learn.

WORST GIG, EVER

This happened when we had had our Disko WTF?! collective for about six months. We got a request for a dj gig from a friend of mine, a rather weird request. We were offered a gig in Naantali, in a club we didn't know, performing before and after BIG Finnish pop singers. I mean top 10 material, some of the artists were in top 10 even when my parents were young.

The request split opinions inside our group. I wanted to do it. The money was good and I thought It'd be a nice experience to play our stuff for a full crowd in a superb setting. The other fellas didn't want to do it. They had good reasons: didn't know the crowd, couldn't play same stuff as the main performer, we had odd disco records, not a hip place to play, too long a distance, people wouldn't get us and so on.

Oh boy, how valid those reasons turned out to be.

I did end up taking that gig. I thought: Why not, I have some good new records and some stuff that EVERYBODY loves. No problemo. I ended up doing it alone as well, was actually my very first time doing a solo gig. Turned out to be the worst gig ever for me and probably for the audience as well.

For starters, it didn't start that well. I was informed that I should come around half past ten or something and I'd get to play after the main artist - who was second or something in the national Idols singer contest that year.

I was thinking about how should I go there and eventually chose the bike. It was a longer journey than I had expected (1,5 hours of biking), I almost got lost on the way and when I got to the place I was out of breath, sweaty and got to hear that I SHOULD HAVE been there at nine. Which was like two hours ago.

Well, I took my records and a free soda (didn't get free beer, dj's usually do) to the open dj booth that was standing at one end of the stage. The mixer setup was somehow wrong and I remember having to wrestle with it for a while. I called my mates for advice. It was back then when I always played with Ripatti and Akahiljane and never had to put the mixers and decks in order just by myself. Eventually I got them to work so that I could play one track from a cd and another from vinyl. I had intended to play a lot more stuff from cd's but now suddenly had to switch back and forth. I think I also got the volumes jumping up and down since I couldn't leave the booth and listen around when playing - loads of records + drunken hi society idiots don't mix - and I didn't see (or understand) the level bars on the mixer.

So, from a technical point of view it was a disaster already.

It was the same thing with entertaining aspect, or in this case, slowly but surely pissing of the crowd. I only had like 45 minutes to play before the artist and an hour and a half after him, but I played all the vinyl I had and most of the cd tracks. Nothing seemed to work. I had some Finnish disco for ironic fun, had some stone cold classics like Madonna's Holiday and MJ's Don't stop til you get enough and very poppy guitar songs like Walk like an Egyptian.

Not a single positive reaction from the crowd.

I think I had played for 10 minutes when the first dissatisfied customer asked if I could play "something completely different to what I was just playing". And people just got more aggressive and drunk from that moment on. I felt cornered since there was no one else there and everybody could just come to my face and do whatever. People were gathering around the edge of the booth at the end of the unfortunate set.

Here's some of the memorable feedback I got from the well-behaving people there:

A female Guido: Play Michael Jackson.

Me: I just did two minutes ago. And I'm playing a mashup of MJ and Owner of a lonely hear just now.

Female Guido: Yeah, but play Beat it.

Female Guido with black hair: Have you been playing shitty music ON PURPOSE for the last hour?

Random Guido: Stop playing this HOMO MUSIC!

‎Indie Guido: You wouldn't happen to have MGMT?

Me: Nope, but I know the band.

Indie Guido: I mean, this record doesn't have anything (I'm playing this).

Me: It DOES: great bassline and awesome synth work.

Indie Guido: Oh look, The Screaming Stukas (points out to the screen of playlist computer).

Me: Well yeah, but that's the playlist computer. Ain't happening.

‎Aggressive-looking buddy Guido: My friend told me to ask you to play some better music.

‎Super Guido: Hey, you wouldn't happen to have Brian Setzer?

Me: No, sorry.

Super Guido: Where's this music coming from?

Me: From that spinning record over there.

Super Guido: Can I see the list of the records you have?

Me: I don't have a list.

Super Guido: Can I go through your record bag?

Me: No you can't.

Super Guido: Well... You wouldn't happen to have, like, Brian Setzer?

Me: Still no. I don't have that much rock with me. Some Clash, Bangles, power pop from 90's.

Super Guido: Yeah, that Clash sucks ass. You wouldn't happen to have, like, Brian Setzer?

It was like this all the gig through. When I saw the lights turned on, I must have thanked god I could stop that nightmare of a gig. After the biking there, surprise mixer problems, worst gig experience ever, there was still the biking home to do. Here's a photo of me, you can read from my expression what I think about the night and the surprising distance between Naantali and Turku.

Even if the experience was pretty dreadful for such a beginner dj as me, I still feel pretty happy that I did it. That's what young guys should do; stupid crazy things, maybe learn from them and pass them on as good stories. I remember even when the shit hit the fan in the midst of the gig I thought that it was somehow humorous or would be humorous when I got to tell it afterwards to other people. So you can take some good advice from me (and I'm happy to give more) but don't steer away from new experiences. And always keep your cool.

Tuesday's Memory Lane: Masked Advice

Playing records - it's not exactly Black Metal when it comes to pre-show face decoration. But sometimes you get the feeling there ought to be something extra for tonight's show. And sometimes that feeling occurs, say, three hours before hitting the stage. And at that point about the only extra you're going to get can be found from Tiimari's department of embarrassing face masks! These things make it impossible to see or hear anything, and they also look mighty stupid. And boy have we worn them countless times. Here's some of the finest face masks we've sported over the last three years.

#1 - The Satan Mask featuring Skeletor

This is from the last year's Halloween party, naturally. The atmosphere was hot enough as it was, and behind the mask the sweat was dripping into my eyes. I couldn't hear shit through the mask's thick earpiece, so the true extra that appeared here was actually the extra challenge in beatmatching the two records. Skeletor-Pete's mask was even more pressing, but luckily I got to choose first. Plus the devil one matched my red shirt.

#2 - The Lone Bear Mask

This was just some drunken bullshit thrown at Mayday eve's party in 2009 (these mask things always seem to happen on public holidays). Kinda liked the Bear Mask, shame I lost it somewhere after the gig. It actually felt very comfortable and fitting. Not to mention the gained hot looks benefits, implied clearly by the balloon here.

#3 - The Cat Mask

The Cat Mask's story is a whole lot different from the previous two. This was cut out by mighty Matti Ranki, and solely designed for the Fest-O-Rama 2011 party. Worn by at least half the festival's artists on stage, we had to give it a shot as well. Poor Nannu The Cat was all over the place that night. The Cat Mask is hanging on my living room wall at the moment. Unlike the Bear Mask, the Devil Mask, the Skeleton Mask, and who-knows-what toy tambourines and other misfortunate gig accessories.

I have no recollection of the music played with the bear mask on. Pic#1's Halloween set was kicked off with Cabaret Voltaire's evergreen (Do the Mussolini) Headkick, but we've all heard that one, right? At pic#3's Fest-o-Rama, we played a lot of more poppier tunes, recent remixes and covers. Like this one:

Monday's Memory Lane: The time I got 2 drunk 2 play

This Friday we are going back to where we started with this whole dj thing: Bar Kuka. There's a nice little recap from our way from that September night to this day at the FB-event. (In Finnish, sorry). And also here's a bigget photo of the flyer for the night.

Since we have started sharing little details of our time as dj's, we thought I'd be nice to share some more stories. So from today to Friday you can read one memorable detail or night we've had in these two and half years.

Let me start, Risto tells another story tomorrow. These are true stories by the way.

THE NIGHT I GOT TOO DRUNK 2 PLAY

This has maybe happened to all of us. Or maybe not.

It was late may 2009 and dj Akahiljane had organized a massive two day indoor festival - Offgame - at our secret warehouse. He had a great idea about putting a real effort for everyone invited, so we had buckets of good food, superb artists (JS666, Dj Emil, Power Point Boys and Ki Ki from Gayborhood) and some beer for the artists. I was supposed to play some tracks to start the Friday evening and get back on decks when it was time to do the last back-2-back's of the night.

Well, the tricky part was this: artists got only just a few beers for free BUT ALL THE VODKA THEY WANTED. For some reason, there was plenty of raw vodka.

So I thought I should take the cheap alternative - I was a relatively poor student then - and sip vodka instead of buying beer after I got my first set done. Whoa, it was alright for the first two small shots. I remember eating the good food and bouncing about when dj Emil played some bmore stuff, BUT after that I it's all blank.

My good friend who escorted me home told me that I had:

- fallen and almost hit my head on a table
- vomited, luckily on the outside of the venue
- left my records behind me and called my friend begging him to go back and bring them to me
- almost passed out at my elevator

The moment I woke up I understood that I had majorly fucked up and missed my second gig. I texted the party organizer and apologized and promised to make it up to him. We are still very good friends. Never underestimate the power of apologizing.

The story has a nice ending, sort of. I did get to play records again the next night, after everyone else had stopped and my super hangover had went away. I remember exactly the point where I won my hangover and that was when Club Power Point played Pet Shop Boys' Always on my mind 12 inch. I was able to dance then and catch the atmosphere of the dancing crowd. I always associate that record to that moment.

So, the moral of the story? Don't get too drunk to play. For me also to stay away from anything more potent than wine. This shit hasn't happened ever since.

LCD Soundsystem's last gig

Needless to say, the band is amazing, James is as charismatic as ever and ALL of the songs are pretty much modern dance classics. Be quick and watch it as soon as you can, it might get taken down because of the right holders.

But hey, here's something extra regarding LCD Soundsystem. Just like R. Kelly would point out, there's there's always an after party after the party, and here's some footage of the last moments of the last after party after the last ever LCD Soundsystem gig.

That's a nice scene when everyone is trying to light the party up by singing the LCD SS tune. Touching. What will live in the history as the last tune of the night... WHAM!

Aeroplane split up last summer, was it all that bad thing after all?

I have been an Aeroplane fan for a long time. I remember I bought their Whispers 12" just when it got out to markets and took their Sebastian Tellier remix to Music review panel (Levyraati) here in Turku. Lukewarm reception BTW. So I can say I've had somewhat close relation to the band.

So when the pair separated last summer, as many other fans, I was a bit disappointed. They were scheduled to come to Finland, and I didn't what would happen. It just happened that I got a chance to do an interview with Vito and at the time it seemed to me that he was the talented one of the duo. After all, it was him who did most of the studio work and Stephen Fasano only helped with ideas.

Now, some 8 months later, the other part of Aeroplane, Stephen Fasano aka The Magician is also steadily delivering some decent tunes and remixes. I think he has a good knack for that bass-driven disco sound which works well on younger dance floors.

What do you reckon, could it actually be that we have now two good dance producers and dj's instead of one? Here's two downloadable recent reworks from The Magician and Aeroplane:

Lop U was a great party and WE made it happen

I need to get something of my chest. We had our last warehouse party last Saturday. It was the end scene in a long run of maybe 5 or so parties. Lots of the people involved from the beginning were back doing a gig or organizing and maybe even some of the crowd has been with us from the start. A reunion.

You do these things for many reasons but I think most of revolve around making a party happen for open-minded people who appreciate the freedom and no-rules-on-music approach. We, the organizers, take the risk to have artists who don't necessarily fit in at the music policies of clubs and the risk of trusting that the people we invite behave nicely even when there's no official bouncers around.

It's really a lot about trust. It takes idealism. Are you willing to trust that if you don't have official rules people who come together can have good fun and party their asses of?

That's what we believed.

Didn't exactly turn around that way. There were a small bunch of idiots who tried to ruin the party for everyone by bitching about, trying to pick up a fight, not paying their way in and tagging the walls.

But you know what? Even after this bunch of assholes took their best shot of fucking everyone's mood up, people still managed to have time of their lives. Just take a look of our photos. I see only smiley faces.

And here's something else: after the last live gig, me and dj Johnny D (who is very underrated as a dj) were starting to play some records back 2 back. Just after 4 songs we had to stop and cut the music, because of the aforementioned wankers. It just happened that I was playing bouncey stuff to re-start when I was told to stop. My last song pick - which will live to be the last of the whole Turku U -series - was a Top Billin' remix of Gil-Scott Heron's Willing.

I remember when I played this, Johnny D said he couldn't have picked a better last song. This morning I listened to it again. Just read the lyrics:

You know what I'm after. We were willing and we made it happen. I'm pretty fucking proud about that. And so should you be, if you were one of the organizers, one of the good crowd, one of the performers or one of the good people who helped us along the way.

Time to look back

First of all, thanks for Festorama. Had a very decent fun whole night through. We played a little more indie type of stuff, Glass Candy, Robyn remixes, Lykke Li and - of course - Prince.

After our gig we ended up doing little backstage shenanigans, I snatched the last dj beer from the bridge (sorry gang), tried to play some bangers after the last band (didn't work out) and Ripatti almost took an eyeful of rest at the balcony of Klubi's upper floor. He did wake up in time to try to play the bangers. Good times. Here's a nice photo ooverage of Saturday, go check out.

In more sad news, we've lost so many great musicians in the last week or so: Nate Dogg, Kurt Hauenstein and Loleatta Holloway. Here's a little something to remember their work and inspire you to dig deeper to what they have done:

Loleatta Holloway, one of the most recognizable voices of disco and house. She does the vocals on one of my most reliable gig favorites - Relight my fire - and on so many other classics. Check this interview with her.

Kurt Hauenstein is the singer on this one. He was a key musician/producer in the euro disco scene. Check out also Ain't gonna feel for that mega-Cosmic vibe.

Fest-O-Rama kicks off

Little inside knowledge, this just between you and me, right...

Anyways, here's the real insider tip: Fest-O-Rama festival starts today with rare films, continues tomorrow with a design market at noon and a full house of music later in Turun Klubi and finishes Sunday with video games and chiptune music by Lisäelämä posse. I would suggest getting your tickets reserved today from 8raita for the Saturday event, so you won't be left out.

Me and Ripatti will be performing Saturday before and between the bands on the middle floor. Will bring some tasty indie stuff, probably try to accompany the good bands with our selection. Maybe something like this:

Happy international R. Kelly Day

Dunno, why it is today, but Facebook says so.

Man, can't even begin to describe all the things R. Kelly means to me. I actually got to review his latest album - which has been sort of a lifelong dream -, shame it was a bit of lame effort. We all know how bat shit amazing some of his songs are, and we all know about the "age ain't nuttin but a number" suspicions and accusations.

Here's three good ways to celebrate the day:

1. Listen to these two mixtapes of his songs by Vic Crezée: The first one. The second. Both of them are made just the way mixtapes should be made: good selection, great mixing, funny sound clips in between.

2. Read Mountain Goats' John Darnielle's 100 reasons why Ignition remix is "so damned great". Possibly while listening to Ignition remix on repeat.

3. Cop the old Real Talk bmore edit here. How dope can a very simple edit be, kudos to F*skars.

Get deep with Turku Underground

Have you ever been to a warehouse party around here? You should.

I like downtown clubbing and everything, but there's something about people putting a lot of effort to make a private party happen, then playing music/perform they want to play with no excuses and witnessing bunch of people you probably don't know digging it all. I might be sentimental fool but it does give some hope that people just coming together can have a good time without tight rules, no business aspects, probably no dickheads around, no ending times when the party is at it's best - just pure fun, together.

Later this month we are throwing our last private party at our current venue. So, last chance saloon to experience the thrill of partying all night long in definite DIY-spirit. Only invites and over 18 get in, so get in touch with us.

Ah, the sweet smell of FREE music. Now that's something we can all bond upon. Anyways, don't want to get into talking about what freely downloadable music does to listening experience or the value of music.

Here are my five picks from the vast internets. They are all 320 kbps or over, so you can blast them in your gigs (if you're a dj). Wouldn't play anything less, I get really annoyed if I hear distortion on files played. And yeah, they all went to distribution because their authors wanted.

Wizardz - Boogie Slyde (BlackLodge Synth Refix)
Nice and funky 80's jam with dope rhythms and bass. Lovingly refixed by BlackLodge who you should follow on Soundcloud for more goodness. BPM: 115.

Rodion + GoldenBug: Washing Machine (Bottin's Spin Cycle Edit)
Our favorite Venice dj is back with a rolling edit. I didn't like this at first, but then I got into the LOOP and DISCOvered it. Would guess this works well on a dance floor. Also BPM: 115

Maxwell - Bad Habits (Dave Nada Club mix)
This one's an older one. I guess bmore sounds are a bit year 2009, but this one still retains it's coolness. It's basically a slow jam, really stylistically spiced up for the dance floor. BPM: 128.

Shine 2009 - New Rules (Remix)
Not shamed to admit that I think Shine 2009 are the best new band around. They released this new remix a while back, it takes the sun-and-wind-like original to more danceable tempo and feel. BPM: 119.

Tahiti 80 - Darlin' (John Talabot's Oscuro Baile Remix)
John Talabot is one hell of a promising dj/producer from Barcelona. I really dig his way of doing these heavy, rhythmic songs that really aren't that fast. Check this interview with him for more insights. I have no idea about the original, but this remix is a winner. BPM: 114.

Brilliantly named DJ Art Vandelay of Sussudio fame plays there weekly and is known for his broad scale of styles ranging from recent disco and house to pop parade of yesterday and back. I guess the man is as fond of Oneohtrix Point Never as he is of New Kids On The Block, so you know it's gonna be good.

Facebookissa siirryttiin Fan page -aikaan, mikä tarkoittaa sitä että liittymällä TIIMIIN saat tiedot mm. blogipostauksista suoraan suone- eiku feediisi. Tykkää siis facebookissa, niin pysyt parhaiten kärryillä.

Muutaman päivän sisään julkaistaan myös upouusi Maxinheittäjä-logo, ja paljastetaan kuka turkulainen artisti on sen meille duunannut. Ollaan nähty ekat versiot, luvassa on HUMORISTINEN & VÄRILLINEN upea kuva.

Jotkut ehkä jo huomasikin, että duunattiin tämän blogin ulkoasua vähän uusiksi. Tärkein uudistus sen suhteen on kuitenkin vasta tuloillaan: Disko-Risto nimittäin alkaa myös kirjoittelemaan sinne, joten jengi saa selkeästi aiempaa paremman kuvan meidän musavalinnoista.

Diskonservatorio-radio-ohjelmani painui tauolle viime syksyllä, kun meikä lähti tekemään tiedekirjallisuutta Tampereelle. Viikko sitten Zoom FM sai paikalliset luvat, ja meikä on takaisin Turussa, joten yhtälössä alkaa toivottavasti pian porista.

Yli parinsadan laatutietoisen musafanin seuraama Spotify-soittis päivittyy taas kohta. Tällä hetkellä sieltä voi vielä tsekkailla viime vuoden parhaat biisit meidän molempien valkkaamina.

Hiljaisella keikkarintamalla on tulossa muutoksia parempaan. Jo ensi perjantaina vallataan Dynamon ALAKERTA, jossa äänentoisto toimii ja jossa tanssilattia on aistikkaan pimeä. Odotetaan todella tätä mahdollisuutta, tullut vietettyä sillä tanssilattialla monta tärkeää iltaa nuorena jannuna. Lisäksi on tulossa keikkoja mm. Klubille ja Bar Kukaan.

The best of year 2010

OH, it's almost time for happy new year.

But it's still a few days left in this year, so it's time to do some Best of lists. We already started with a Top 50 songs found in Spotify and updated that last Thursday. You can check in, listen and like if you want to HERE.

There will be more Top lists of this year later on, so check in here later on as well. We both did a list for our regular spot Dynamo, so at least those will be out sooner or later.

We are also featuring in next Saturdays Nakit ja Muusit -night @ Cup Pint. Nakit ja Muushit is a night run by Sheikki Sheikki-Hrrri and dj Seoul who is a talented dj. Last time we played with them two was in summer, and I can guarantee they've got good taste in disco, house and boogie new and old.

We've got a lot of stuff lined up for the new year, but haven't sorted them out yet. Anyways, hope you all had a good Xmas and will have a good New Year's Ball.

Friday cameos at Dynamo

Just a quick tip about where to head tomorrow (Friday):

The good folk of Sussudio club are releasing a new mixtape and having a party to celebrate it. We - together with some 10 other dj's - are making short, action-packed cameos at Dynamo downstairs, so join in on the fun from 22 onwards. Here's the facebook event for more info.

I'll probably try to accompany the Sussudio club's running themes with some 80's style dancey electro stuff, and probably try to slip in some quality surprise disco. I'll take at least these two big crowd favorites with me:

Getting ready for next year

Here's what's gonna happen in the coming year:

Yup, we're gonna do some changes around here. Our normal club night will go on as usual and deliver disco goodness at Dynamo. We are probably bringing some dope guests for this season, if we can get their schedules to fit. This blog might go from being written in English to Finnish, and we both should be contributing more to this. My radio show - Diskonservatorio - might just go back to radio waves if I can get a good platform for it. Spotify-lists and mixes will definitely go on, since people really dig them and they really are a good way of spreading around our knowhow and favorites. Our Facebook group page will probably change to Fan page, so we can update it more easily.

Musicwise we are are broadening our spectra even more.

There's a few other aces up our sleeves, but you'll just have to sit tight and wait for the news. We haven't sorted them all out yet.

But what we definitely want to do more is get connected with you and get some feedback. So, what would you like us to have more or do differently next season?

Sheikki Sheikki have Uusi Fantasia at Klubi. One of the most interesting dance music collectives are on their way to drop a new album, so they have come here to test it out.

We visited the good Sheikki Sheikki folk last month at it was an amazing night. Then we did it with just a bunch of dj's so tonight should top that proper.

I also promised to make a mix a week or to back. It's a bit tricky to pull off at the moment, but I'm on it. I'm been to Tampere for the past few weeks and I've been feeling the place I'm staying there. I think I'm trying to filter a bit of the atmosphere of that house to my mix. It's going to be real good and loaded with autumn vibes, I promise.

Set of news

Let's break it down.

The Diskonservatorio radio show - twice a month show about local deejays for local deejays - aired it's last episode last week. I honestly don't know yet if I'll continue it or not. I've been getting a good feedback all along, so it's not really about the motivation.

What it IS about is stemming from a personal matter: I'm leaving my hometown for three months this Thursday. I got an internship at a great place doing the stuff I've been studying so I'll be pretty busy and stressed with making the most of this situation. I don't know what'll happen after that - I hope the get some grand idea of what I'll do as a REAL JOB - but it means I'll be less active with the DWTF blog stuff and dj'ing in Turku. I'll do some weekend gigs, but probably not weekdays. After the internship I'll take a deep look at my life and see what I really wanna do - and what I have time and energy for.

Our gig list will be updated at our Facebook page, so you can always check it from there. At the time we have two gigs incoming, the first one being a guest dj slot with dj gentlemen Sheikki Sheikki and other local dj's. The second one is Ripatti's solo gig at a literary happening.

Since I'm off the air for at least three months and busy with actual work, I wanted to share some new music with you before I leave for Tampere. So, Spotify playlist got half of the songs replaced with new ones. I'll also try and make a new mix for everyone to enjoy this week or the next one. And I'll try to get Ripatti to contribute to the playlist or to this blog while I'm away.

Incoming tomorrow

Tomorrow it's time to take the Dynamo upstairs again. This time we are bringing not one, but two friends. We wanted to give a chance to take on the Dynamo dancefloor to a new disco dogs, so this is their chance. They're probably way better when I started up there, but I'd say everyone is.

Dj Johnny D is a local new cat who bangs a radio show on Zoom FM. He did a cool set on a warehouse party where we played too, and we decided to give the mixmaster a green light.

The other one is Antti Juuso from Helsinki. He does a monthly club MBar and when we visited there twice we were taken by the length and depth of his boogie, disco and electro selections. What a better time to let him loose on a decent dancefloor?

All night it's free - don't mind the small line on the poster. I think I feel like playing some very cool disco cuts to warm the night up the young fellows. We might drop some Top 10's soon, so keep an eye out for those. I'll link mine here on the blog.

Lifestyle lessons

I'm knee deep in work and studying, so just a quick blog post: I did get to see DJ Harvey - one of the legendary dj's still around and top of their game - do his balearic thing on Flow Festival, and this was one of the songs he played. A good lesson in lifestyle if you listen closely to the words... well, maybe not!

I think Ripatti has been playing this one for a while, I remember him doubting about dropping it on a rock bar where we were dj'ing, way back when we we're starting this whole thing out.

If you can see DJ Harvey, do it. He's not too keen to do mixes or anything, so live dj sets is the thing. For the Finnish readers, there's already some talk of bringing him back here, so keep your fingers crossed... Anyways, if you want to chill it out with cool balearic mix, check out Daniele Baldelli's mixes. He was the one of the guys behind the whole cosmic disco thing. Get ready for tomorrow's Italian Job

It's party time again. Turku Non Jazz is a three day mini festival with a good program (check the link for full info) of live sets and the makers and shakers of Turku dj scene. Me and Risto are accompanied Friday by the great Italian nu-disco, or perhaps more aptly nu-italo?, artist called Bottin. The dj and producer from Venice has done more than impressive career with the tastemaking labels such as Italians do it Better and Eskimo Records.

We will play alongside him on Friday at Dynamo. Our slot is from 23 to 24, so come early to catch the little disco hour of our own. I'm bringing some new stuff from the likes of Eli Escobar and older rarities such as Gichy Dan & Beachwood 9. After our gig we might do some back to back action later that evening, and probably feature later the weekend under "All Stars gigs". So lots of good reasons to take all you can get from this weekend.

But here's some Bottin favorites to wake up your interests. He's done a lot of other good productions - and seems to get better as time passes by - so take a peak at his Soundcloud.

Set sail!

Tomorrow it's time for highly awaited Ilmiö festival - check out the info's here. Me and Risto will be spinning records for everyone who travels by the water bus to the festival site or back to Turku from there.

We are already starting way early in the morning - the first bus leaves at 11.30 I think - which is pretty cool in a way. Long shifts ahead to really explore the depth of our record crates, it's a bit like doing two gigs in a day. The weather forecast is pretty dooming - nothing but heavy rain through the day - but we'll do our best to bring a little sunshine to the decks of the water bus.

Last minute change

We are having a last minute change on the schedule of today: we might already do our thing at 23. So come and join us at Blanko already then, if you don't want to miss us out.

We have prepared something special for the evening so it's not to be missed.

It's actually the first time we've planned the whole gig beforehand, but due to this late change we might take an alternate route... Anyways, only guaranteed special good music will be played ranging from basement house to exotic disco treats. I'll try to tape the whole set so we can look back at this amazing opportunity later on.

Promo mix out + Info on our festival gigs

At last.

So, we are heading to two festival gigs in the next two weekends. The first is Turku Modern - highly anticipated dj-based festival we are extremely happy to play in - and the second will be Ilmiö where we will be playing at a boat that takes the festival goers to the event place. Very cool place to play indeed and the actual festival is packed with amazing list of artists for a very low price. Very recommended.

Next Friday's Turku Modern schedules are already out and our gig can be experienced between Finnish legends Lauri Soini and Roberto Rodriguez at Bar Blanko. We start at 00.15 and go on for an hour and 15 minutes. We are looking forward to this more than anything and it does feel like a huge recognition for the effort we've put into this whole thing. We will be bringing our best and classic songs with something special on the side. So hope you can come to celebrate this milestone with us.

I did a promo mix for the Ilmiö festival. I've talked about this mix for a while, and I finally got around to do it and now the sound quality isn't always the best. It's not the files that are bad, but my dj software couldn't handle the mixing :(. Anyways, good tracks and some nice switches. Two Chris Rea tracks for a finish!

Sorry for the slow week or two. Too much to do, too little time or energy... And football on the telly every day. (Here's a definite football song, as gay as it comes)

The good news is that we're doing our best to bring some very highly appreciated dj's to do a gig at Turku, so we're not lazying our asses off. It's a lot of effort but hopefully we can make them happen. So cross your fingers.

Tonight (Thursday 17th) you can get catch a lot of our selections by checking my Diskonservatorio radio show from 20 to 22 at local Zoom radio and later from 22 to late night at the cozy Bar Kuka. That makes at least 5 hours of specially picked music from us to you.

Had a busy week with three gigs, one radio show and one definite clubbing experience as a dancer with a legendary dj hero. Four days of drinking in a row does take it's toll...

Let's try to recap some of the experience: last Wednesday we had the possibility to play at a swimming stadium, which was very cool with the sun setting down and the water all still. It would have been a lot cooler if the decks hadn't been put way up in the tower which is for the divers. I was terrified to trembles, and barely could get myself to play. Todd Terje's Eurodans seemed to fit the atmosphere perfectly. We had the pleasure to dj with Kimito Diskotek from Sussudio - holla!

Thursday we took the train to Helsinki to play at the terrace of Mbar. We were accompanied by dj Antti Juuso. It was a nice evening filled with italo and boogie classics. I dropped a Prince-related selection at one point, including this jam. Many thanks for the full terrace and Antti Juuso for this opportunity.

Friday was one of those nights that a disco dj saves your life. Daniel Wang did a free gig in Turku, which still amazes me, and oh boy, does he know how to put up a party. A full night of disco bliss with loads of instrumental sections - accompanied by Danny doing the air guitar thing - and great mixing. It's quite telling that the evening ended with a conga-line lead by Daniel. It definitely showed me that there's so much to learn. One of the numerous highlights was this B-side. I better get that record...

Saturday we cooled out at a boat. It's still quite freezing out here in Finland. We were accompanied by other dj from the forementioned Sussudio, Art Vandelay. It was a good experience, maybe played too much house and club-associated stuff, dunno. This italo classic got a good response as did Ripatti's weird disco edits.

And of course we had to take a fan photo with Daniel. So embarrassing to act like a teenager, but hey, you need to have heroes to look up to.

Busy week incoming

Sorry for the lack of updates. I went to a dentist to have two teeth removed. The pain and loss of solid food took all my energies, and I'm just slowly getting back to feeling even alright.

It's good that I am, since the forthcoming week is going to be superbusy for us: we are doing three gigs in a row with a-must see Daniel Wang visit in Turku sandwiched between them. We are starting the busy week at Olohuone festival opening party at Samppalinna swimming stadium and later the night at Dynamo. I'm very excited to get to play near a pool, that's as balearic as it comes in Finland. After that we go to Helsinki to support dj Antti Juuso at Mbar. (People at Turku can hear my radio show normally at Zoom FM, but this time starting already at 20 pm) Antti Juuso is a cool dj with a solid taste in classic cult disco from 80's - recommended. Friday it's Daniel Wang at Blanko, Turku. We are not playing, but I have to be there to witness one of my dj heroes. If you don't know Danny, you can check interviews here or here. Turku peoples, don't sleep on this one. We wrap the busy week with the end club for Olohuone at ship/restaurant Lulu.

This Sunday's house is on the house. I found not one but two good house mixes to share this time. The first one comes from the Holy Moly DJ's, and it's all Mike Dunn. (Great concept for a mix!). Some of you might know Mike from Phreaky MF (which samples this classic). So on that Soundcloud player is a good introduction to his other work in form a smooth mix. Lots of my dj friends have been quite enthusiastic about that mix, so I thought you should get a share of it as well. Like stars shining

Disco videos are seldom dull. Most of them were made in the glitzy late 70's when everyone went disco, with very little self-criticism, so the results are usually pretty hilarious from today's stand point of view. Here's three video takes whose glamour time has ripped apart, loosely lumped together by the theme of flying and stars.

I just had to include this one in. Wade Nichols aka Dennis Parker was an adult entertainment performer and a regular actor who went disco with Casablanca Records. The song is actually quite good (and has been recycled numerous times), but the video is even better. There's so much feeling in his mustached performance, look at him wave around and claim the skies!

Dee D. Jackson's Automatic Lover videos usually have a soft focus lens Barbara Walters would be proud of. This video is all dreamy fantasy, even if some suggest it's a song about vibrators... Anyways, look at the pants of that robot, he's packing a hefty personal robot tool in there. The main vocal melody works really well. BTW, the Finnish cover of this is in demand, so be very happy if you happen to have a copy.

This is rather bizarre. Apparently it's a disco choreographed version of the main Star Wars theme and the Mos Eisley canteen tune. Not one but four Darth Vader's doing spins to a disco beat - win.

Love is the message

I did an interview Tuesday for a local paper. It's a series called "Record shelf raid", so I dug out some of my favorite records and talked about the role of music in my life. I also answered a lot of questions about disco, and these two of the questions got me thinking: "do you see any social messages on the music you play" and "what about the aspect of irony regarding disco".

I'm not a good interviewee, so I answered that it's problematic to just see social messages in song lyrics. I tried to refer to classic views on how disco music brought people together in the dancefloor and helped loose the relations between people from different backgrounds. It was a way too theoretical answer to give, but there's some logic behind it: there's not that much of deeper meaning to be found on disco lyrics - there are some exceptions of course - but I firmly believe there's loads of meaning and massive amounts of talent in the musicianship behind disco cuts. Those musicians were from hardworking jazz backgrounds and had the possibility to pursuit a full-time musical career - made less and less possible today by file sharing -, so I doubt we will see as talented generation of music any time soon. Even if I love to dig the weirdest and dumbest disco - and people who go out to a club want to listen to those cuts to loosen up -, I still like to emphasize the musical aspects of the good disco. Next time you listen to a disco cut, go ahead and listen if every instrument takes turns in jamming it out on the beat - a bit like in jazz.
