Get ready for tomorrow's Italian Job

It's party time again. Turku Non Jazz is a three day mini festival with a good program (check the link for full info) of live sets and the makers and shakers of Turku dj scene. Me and Risto are accompanied Friday by the great Italian nu-disco, or perhaps more aptly nu-italo?, artist called Bottin. The dj and producer from Venice has done more than impressive career with the tastemaking labels such as Italians do it Better and Eskimo Records.

We will play alongside him on Friday at Dynamo. Our slot is from 23 to 24, so come early to catch the little disco hour of our own. I'm bringing some new stuff from the likes of Eli Escobar and older rarities such as Gichy Dan & Beachwood 9. After our gig we might do some back to back action later that evening, and probably feature later the weekend under "All Stars gigs". So lots of good reasons to take all you can get from this weekend.

But here's some Bottin favorites to wake up your interests. He's done a lot of other good productions - and seems to get better as time passes by - so take a peak at his Soundcloud.

Ps. Our Spotify playlist got updated yesterday, so head there for new musical discoveries.

See ya this weekend.

Confessions of a disco freak

I feel like posting something about disco again.

When we started this Dj collective of ours we we're all pretty into the disco thing. Even though roughly half of the songs we play in our sets are from other genres that we try make sit well in a disco environment, the common ground was disco or danceability in its multiple variations. (Of couse, historically all club music stems from disco)

Now, I've been discovering (nice choice of a word, eh) that the all important global underground hipster/dance music scene is really bringing disco back. It seems to be bubbling under the surface in different forms: as disco edits from Great Britain, as disco house from the likes of Duck Sauce or Mr.Oizo, as Finnish disco for the nostalgic crowd, as disco punk for the tight-trousered ones... All in all, there's a lot of talk about disco revival - even though it never really left us.

I don't think we we're too conscious about this global trend when we started with this name and idea. I kinda dropped listening to trendy music - besides the music I listen for work purposes - a few years back. So I don't really known what the blog hits and undercurrent trends are.

And from the start, I've always been very sceptical about playing my disco favorites here since there really seems to be a handful of people who get the same kicks as I do, for example from listening to Sylvester. Now, do discover that there really is a noteworthy disco scene blowing up globally... I really don't know what do think of it. Suddenly I'm a trendy dj? WTF is happening?

Here's a few good interviews about the disco upheaval, from the indie-accepted DFA artists:

James Murphy on Resident Advisor

Juan MacLean on XLR8R TV

What a good point on disco edits as taking the gayness out of original disco.

And on the gayness note, if you don't know what Horse Meat Disco is about check a good interview here. They're coming to Finland as well, should be a lot of fun.

Anyways, have a good weekend y'all, dance and have fun. I'll post later a good update about an event we're organizing with the chiptune pioneers of Turku. So keep your eyes on this page...

Just a reminder about tomorrow

It's been a busy week with courses starting and some freelance work to deal with, so I'm real happy to welcome the weekend. I really can't wait to spin some disco 4 all the people @ Klubi tomorrow. It should be good.

Here's a few definite picks.

"I just wait to Saturday".

Now tell me: does this the last one feel more like a sad song or more like a party song? I can't make up my mind.

Chase the clouds away

After you listen this song, there'll be no care in the world. Amazing, mellow, airy with definate feeling it could go on and on. A forefather for today's Windsurf, Sorcerer and Classixx maybe?

I have no idea about the artist, but it seems that it's a pretty rare italo gem. If someone has a copy, holla at me!

Have a good weekend.

Turku Modern Weekend

It's going down, from tonight to Sunday. Here's more info.

It's pretty much filled with all the street-cred dj's around Turku and Helsinki. It'll be superinteresting to hear how the best dj's work their magic.

Gonna finish this post with something that's not really modern, but a definite weekend classic. Have a good one, y'all...
